Chapter 17

Knight in Shining Armor

Ron Digali was nervous and excited. He was excited to see Sunli again and nervous because he had no idea what to say. A typical engineer, Digali tended to be awkward around women. While he could expound brilliantly on the physics of electrical pulse generators, his own pulse raced and his words became twisted whenever an attractive female walked into the room. Sunli is different, thought Digali. She shared Digali’s scientific prowess and stubborn dedication to the research and discovery process. Although Sunli had never spoken to him about anything personal, or even about anything other than the LENR, Digali was certain that they were meant to be a match. He just couldn’t understand why she would abandon the team with no communication, but he was sure that as soon as he got her alone he would find out.

As he followed the Chinese official through the sprawling convention center, Digali thought about the other reason he had flown nearly 7,000 miles to get there—the LENR trigger. He knew that if he could find his way into the Chinese laboratories, he could search for evidence that the experiments they found in the forest in Mexico were now underway here in Beijing. He just had to find a way to get into the Chinese lab.

“Are you familiar with the Advanced Energy Lab?” Digali asked the distinguished military official walking beside him. “I am an American physicist here for the conference, and I was hoping there would be a chance to tour the facility while I am in town.”

“General Wu Liu,” Wu said, shaking Digali’s hand. “I work closely with the lab and can arrange for you to have a tour. Where are you from?”

“Sandia Labs in New Mexico. I’m Ron Digali. I was actually working on a project with Dr. Hidalgo when she had to relocate to Beijing. I’m hoping to catch up with her this week.”

“Interesting,” Wu responded. “I doubt Dr. Hidalgo will be available to visit right after her speech, so why don’t I schedule you to join a tour of the lab this afternoon?” Wu tapped on his cellphone. “There, it’s all arranged. Meet the group at the north entrance at 1400 hours. That’s 2 p.m.”

Digali nodded. He wanted to try to reach Sunli sooner rather than later, but he couldn’t pass up this opportunity to get into the lab. Surely, he could track her down after the tour.

“Thank you, sir,” Digali said. “I appreciate that more than you can know.”

“Oh, I know, Dr. Digali,” Wu responded mysteriously. “It all will work out just fine.”

Dr. Sunli Hidalgo stood at the podium addressing about 300 scientists, engineers, investors, and politicians gathered in the plenary hall. Dressed in a gray pinstriped skirt and matching suit jacket, with her shiny black hair twisted into a sophisticated chignon, she captivated the mostly male audience in the room. Sunli was wrapping up her presentation, which, based on the polite bursts of applause when she made key points, appeared to be well received.
